Freeways, trucks and softer ground
Interstate 880, Interstate 680 and Highway 237 meet in this part of the valley, and truck and delivery traffic is a daily part of life. Entry drives, gate approaches and docks are the first places to feel it.
Closer to the bay, the soil is often clay and the water table can be higher. In winter, the base can hold moisture, and the loaded wheels of trucks push into it. That leads to ruts and alligator cracks. In summer, heat softens asphalt, and standing trailers can leave marks. An inspection looks at the wheel paths and low areas to decide whether the base needs reinforcing before any surface work.
